The Toyota Crown Signia has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The NX doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The Crown Signia has standard Whiplash Injury Lessening Seats, which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash Injury Lessening Seats system allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The NX doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Crown Signia has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The NX doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Crown Signia. But it costs extra on the NX.

Both the Crown Signia and the NX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Toyota Crown Signia is safer than the Lexus NX:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Toyota Crown Signia is safer than the Lexus NX:

Warranty

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Crown Signia for 1 year and 15000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the NX (2/25000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 5 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Crown Signia’s warranty.

Reliability

The battery on the Crown Signia is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the Crown Signia’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The NX’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

Engine

The Crown Signia’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid produces 37 more horsepower (240 vs. 203) than the NX 250’s standard 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Toyota Crown Signia is faster than the Lexus NX:

On the EPA test cycle the Crown Signia gets better mileage than the NX running its gasoline engine:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Crown Signia uses regular unleaded gasoline. The NX 350 AWD requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Crown Signia higher (6 out of 10) than the Lexus NX (5 to 6). This means the Crown Signia produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the NX every 15,000 miles.

Tires and Wheels

The Crown Signia XLE’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the NX’s standard 60 series tires. The Crown Signia Limited’s tires have a lower 45 series profile than the NX’s optional 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Crown Signia XLE has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the NX. The Crown Signia Limited’s 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the NX.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Crown Signia’s wheelbase is 6.3 inches longer than on the NX (112.2 inches vs. 105.9 inches).

The Crown Signia Limited handles at .82 G’s, while the NX 350 AWD pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Crown Signia Limited executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.1 seconds quicker than the NX 450h+ AWD (27.3 seconds @ .67 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

Passenger Space

The Crown Signia has .8 inches more front headroom, 1.1 inches more front legroom, .7 inches more front shoulder room, .4 inches more rear headroom, 1 inch more rear legroom and 1 inch more rear shoulder room than the NX.

Cargo Capacity

The Crown Signia has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the NX with its rear seat up (25.8 vs. 22.7 cubic feet). The Crown Signia has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the NX with its rear seat folded (68.8 vs. 46.9 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Crown Signia easier. The Crown Signia’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 28 inches, while the NX’s liftover is 30.8 inches.

The Crown Signia’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the NX’s (2700 vs. 0 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Crown Signia’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the NX.

The power windows standard on both the Crown Signia and the NX have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Crown Signia is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The NX prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

If the windows are left open on the Crown Signia the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the NX can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Crown Signia has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the NX.

The Toyota Crown Signia has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Lexus charges extra for Homelink® on the NX.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Toyota Crown Signia has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the NX.
