The Crown Signia has standard Whiplash Injury Lessening Seats, which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash Injury Lessening Seats system allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The RX doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Toyota Crown Signia achieved a “Good” rating - the highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Lexus RX has not been tested.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Crown Signia. But it costs extra on the RX.

Both the Crown Signia and the RX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Toyota Crown Signia is safer than the Lexus RX:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Toyota Crown Signia is safer than the Lexus RX:

Warranty

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Crown Signia for 1 year and 15000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the RX (2/25000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 5 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Crown Signia’s warranty.

Reliability

The battery on the Crown Signia is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the Crown Signia’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The RX’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

As tested in Motor Trend the Toyota Crown Signia is faster than the Lexus RX:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Crown Signia uses regular unleaded gasoline. The RX 350 requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

Tires and Wheels

The Crown Signia XLE’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the RX’s standard 60 series tires. The Crown Signia Limited’s tires have a lower 45 series profile than the RX’s optional 50 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Crown Signia Limited handles at .82 G’s, while the RX 500h F Sport Performance pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Crown Signia Limited executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the RX 350h (27.3 seconds @ .67 average G’s vs. 28.6 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

Passenger Space

The Crown Signia has 1 inch more front legroom and .3 inches more rear headroom than the RX.

Cargo Capacity

The Crown Signia has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the RX with its rear seat folded (68.8 vs. 46.2 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Crown Signia easier. The Crown Signia’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 28 inches, while the RX’s liftover is 31 inches.

Ergonomics

The Crown Signia has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the RX.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Toyota Crown Signia has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the RX.
